Muslims in Nigeria have been counselled to look out for the new moon of Zul Qadah 1447AH.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, made the through the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Sambo Junaidu, on Thursday.
The statement said Friday, April 17, 2026, corresponding with Shawwal 19, 1447AH, has been designated for the sighting of the new crescent.
“The Sultan has directed Muslims across the country to look out for the new moon of Dhul Qadah on Friday,” Junaidu said.
He said anyone who sights the crescent should report to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan.
“Any person who sights the crescent is requested to report such information to the nearest District or Village Head,” he stated.
The statement stressed the importance of the exercise in determining the commencement of the new Islamic month and urged Muslims to participate diligently.
“The cooperation of all Muslims in this regard is highly solicited,” it added.
