The Sultanate Council of Sokoto on Thursday condemned the lynching of a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, for alleged blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The student, identified as Deborah Samuel, was beaten to death and set ablaze by some students Thursday morning.
The Sultanate disclosed this in a statement signed by the secretary of the council, Sa’idu Muhammadu Maccido (Danburan Sokoto).
The statement said, “The Sultanate Council condemned the incident in its totality and has urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the unjustifiable incident to justice.”
The council also urged the people of the state to remain calm and ensure peaceful co-existence among all.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that Ms Deborah made the alleged blasphemous comment at the hostel during a disagreement with other students.
One of the students told our correspondent that, “She (Deborah) was then asked to rescind her statement and apologize but she refused to do so which angered other Muslim students of the college.”
The deceased was said to have been whisked to the security outpost in the college for protection. However, the rampaging students overpowered them, killed the lady and burnt her body to ashes, it was learnt.
Our correspondent observed heavy presence of well armed security personnel in the school and students were seen trooping out of the school premises.
