A student of the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya in Jema’a local government area, has been shot dead during a protest over hike in school fees.
A source told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the deceased had joined his colleagues to protest a hike in schools fees when security operatives made attempt to disperse them forcefully.
The source said the students came out to protest over the increase in school fees in the state-owned institution when they met security operatives outside the college.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Mohammed Jalike, said he was yet to get details of the incident.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE recalled that Kaduna State Governor had in April increased tuition fees of all state tertiary institutions by almost 500 percent, a development that had sparked a protest by students of the state university.
The university’s chapter chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Peter Adamu had said that 75 percent of the university’s students may drop out of school due to the monumental increase in tuition fees.
