A strange disease has killed 45 people in Gundutse village, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
Those reportedly killed were mostly women, children, and the elderly over the past two weeks.
The disease causes malaria, diarrhoea, and vomiting.
It was learnt that the due to the alarming situation of the disease, locals started burying five people daily.
A local who lost two children, Abu Sani, said at the onset, they took the ailment to be malaria affecting his two-year-old son, who died despite medical intervention.
A week after, Sani said, a second family member became unconscious and died before reaching the hospital.
A female local, Hajara Abubakar, whose son was ill, said, “For over two weeks now, people have been dying here from an illness we are yet to know. So far, I know of 40 people who have died.”
Health officials at the Gundutse clinic revealed that 20 persons have died from the strnage disease.
The incident has been reported to the state’s Ministry of Health, an anonymous health officer revealed, adding that water and blood samples had been collected for laboratory analyses to determine the exact cause of the outbreak.
The interim chairman of Kura Local Government Council, Yahaya Tijjani Kura, confirmed the illness but said the death toll was not as revealed.
Kura said only three persons had died from disease.
The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said investigation was ongoing to ascertain the real cause of the deaths.
