The Sri Lankan government has allocated 2.08 billion rupees (about 7 million dollars) to modernise the country’s postal service, a minister said Monday.
Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, speaking at a ceremony in Colombo where 731 individuals were recruited to the postal service.
Jayatissa said the funds would be used to upgrade facilities and introduce new technologies.
Of the total allocation, about 200 million rupees (about 670,000 dollars) would be spent on purchasing new trucks, vans, laptops, and desktop computers, he said.
He added that another 600 million rupees (about 2 million dollars) would go toward new construction projects.
Jayatissa added that the government plans to recruit an additional 3,000 individuals to the department soon. (Xinhua/NAN)
