Thembi Nkadimeng, minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs (CoGTA), announced on Wednesday that the South African government has chosen to remove the “National State of Disaster” that had been imposed in February to address the electrical issue.
Using current law and backup plans, the government will work through its Energy Crisis Committee to lessen the effects of power outages, according to a statement from CoGTA.
According to the statement, the national state of calamity ended immediately.
The goal of declaring a national disaster was to give the government more authority to address the energy problem, including allowing emergency procurement procedures with less bureaucratic red tape and supervision.
