The governorship election in Anambra state is holding today as 2.8 million registered eligible voters were expected to perform the their civic responsibility.
Fifteen candidates from different political parties are contesting in the election along incumbent Governor Charles Soludo of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The other candidates and the parties they represent include Onyeeze Chidi Charles – Accord Party (A), Nweke Ezechukwu Japhet – Action Alliance (AA), Ifemeludike Chioma Grace – Africa Action Congress (AAC), Nwosu Chima John – African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nicholas Ukachukwu – All Progressives Congress (APC), Otti Cyprain Echezona – Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nweke Chrispopher Chukwudubem – Action Peoples Party (APP) and Okeke Chika Jerry – Boot Party (BP).
The others are Moghalu George Nnadubem Labour Party (LP), Onyejegbu Geoffrey – New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ndidi Christy Olieh – National Rescue Movement (NRM), Ezenwafor Jude – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chukwurah Vincent – Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chukwuma Paul Chukwuka – Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Ugwoji Uchenna Martin – Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
Already, voting has had begun at Polling Unit 001, Ward 8, Demonstration Primary School II, Agu-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area, as residents turned out to participate in Saturday’s Anambra governorship election.
Voters came out early in the morning lining up at the polling unit while officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are ensuring ballots and election materials are properly handled.
According to INEC, all the 5,718 polling units would open at 8.30am today, with 6,879 BVAS devices configured and backed up, and over 24,000 trained ad hoc staff are on ground for the election.
The commission concluded the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to all local government areas on Thursday at the Central Bank of Nigeria office in Awka, and supervised by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Queen Awgu, under heavy security.
She said key materials, including the BVAS, Forms EC8A, and Forms EC8B had be conveyed to registration area centres ahead of the poll.
