A fruit vendor in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, Abdulkadir Musa, has been shot dead by a soldier for refusing to allow him to go away with a bunch of bananas without payment.
An eyewitness said the incident happened on Sunday.
He said two soldiers paid N300 for a bunch of bananas, but tried to collect another bunch for free, which led to disagreement between them and the fruit vendor.
Also narrating the incident, the deceased’s father, Alhaji Mustafa Musa, said his son reported his ordeal with soldiers at a police station close to the scene of the incident, and the two soldiers were arrested, but were released shortly after.
Mustapha said after the soldiers were released, one of them went home, fetched a gun and returned to the scene and shot the fruit vendor.
“My son was shot in the back and we took him to the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, but unfortunately, he died,” he said.
“I have reported the case to the concerned authorities and I will not rest until the soldier is punished to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The state’s police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the incident.
He said the command has commenced investigation into the incident.
