The Sokoto State Government has said Governor Ahmed Aliyu did not accompany his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Alex Otti, on a visit to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, currently serving life imprisonment at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.
Spokesperson to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, who stated this following reports in the media that Aliyu and Otto visited Kanu at the Correctional Center, said the reports was misleading and completely inaccurate.
Bawa said Governor Aliyu was outside the country on November 30, 2025—specifically in Saudi Arabia, where he was performing the Lesser Hajj—at the time Governor Otti privately visited Sokoto State.
He said a delegation of Sokoto State Commissioners and Special Advisers received Ottii upon arrival at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport,, adding that the officials then guided the Abia governor to the Sokoto Government House, where he was received with the standard courtesies extended to all visiting state leaders.
“As you all know, the people of Sokoto are hospitable. We treat our visitors with utmost respect, irrespective of tribe or religion,” the statement noted.
Bawa said Governor Aliyu remains a law-abiding leader who respects constituted authority and is committed to the unity and progress of Nigeria.
The statement urged the public to disregard the erroneous reports and called on media organisations to verify information before publication to avoid misleading the public.
