At least six persons were killed and a traditional ruler kidnapped in Karfi, a village in Takai Local Government area of Kano state.
Three other persons were badly injured, according to witnesses.
The assailants raided the village and abducted the 53-year-old village head, Abdulyahyah Ilo.
The kidnappers stormed the village on three motorcycles from Bauchi State through Ringim forest in Jigawa.
The kidnappers reportedly abducted the village head on their way out of the town after the attack.
Attempts by villagers to track down the gunmen were not successful. The kidnappers opened fire and killed six and wounded three others.
Spokesperson of the police in Kano, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said a team of police officers has been dispatched to the village to rescue the abducted village head and arrest the suspects.
