At least six people are feared dead on Saturday at Abuloma, in Port Harcourt after crisis erupted in the elections organised by the Jonathan Lokpobiri -led Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) for the Eastern Zone.
Residents said six youths were either shot and killed or cut to death with cutlasses, others said two were confirmed dead while others sustained various degrees of injuries.
The gunshots were said to have rattled the area sending residents to different directions for safety.
The IYC eastern zone has fixed the election earlier postponed to Saturday.
Serious disagreement occurred midway into the exercise as gunmen stormed the venue and started shooting indiscriminately.
The shootings caused panic thus forcing them to run to different directions while some of them were hit trying to escape from the scene.
Rivers Police Command spokesperson , Grace Iringe-Koko, who described the incident as ‘senseless shooting’ did not give casualty figure,
Iringe-Koko said the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, quickly ordered a crackdown to ensure that the perpetrators were fished out to face justice.
She said the perpetrators had run into their hidings.
