Seven persons were reportedly killed by an explosive device allegedly planted by Lakurawa insurgents in Tangaza local government area of Sokoto state.
The victims, including females, were returning from a Sallah visit to Gwabro village in motorcycles when one of them hit the device which was planted under a tree at a place where troops usually take their rest during operation.
According to local sources, six males died on the spot while one of the two girls affected died on Monday.
Confirming the incident, the Special Assistant to the Chairman, Tangaza local government area, Ghazzali Rakah said the explosion occured on Sunday.
He said the victims were from Zurmuku village.
“They were coming back from their Sallah visit to Gwabro village and on their way decided to take rest under that tree.
“The place was used by troop as their eating place during their operation in the area, I suspected the Lakurawa planted the device in anticipation of their coming,” he said
According to Rakah, the anti-bomb squad of the Nigerian Police were deployed to the area to search for other devices.
It would be recalled that some months ago, some soldiers died in the area after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device while on routine operation.
