The Senate on Wednesday resolved to consult with the House of Representatives on how to respond to President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision on the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced the senators’ position after the closed session which lasted for about 40 minutes.
“The Senate discussed the way forward on how to respond to the letter from Mr President on the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill.
“The Senate consequently resolved to consult with the House of Representatives in January when the two chambers will be in full session.
“We also resolved to consult our respective constituents on the way forward before then,” he explained.
On Tuesday, some senators collected signatures and vowed to override Buhari on the bill.
Rivers senator George Sekibo told Channels Television that 73 senators indicated interest to veto the president on the matter, but failed to provide the names of the signatories.
The Senate will need at least two-thirds of its 109 members to vote in support of overriding the president’s veto if the matter is put to vote.
The 73 senators Mr Sekibo talked about makes up the exact number that is required to commence the process.
