Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, says there are no plans to bring back the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) unit.
SARS was disbanded following nationwide protests in October 2020 over alleged human right abuses by its operatives.
The Special Weapons and Tactical unit (SWAT) was created to take over the functions of SARS.
In a statement by force spokesperson Frank Mba, the IGP dismissed the reports that the police was.planning to reintroduce the unit.
Baba said there are no plans to bring back the unit “under any guise”, and called on Nigerians to disregard the report.
“The IGP notes that the Force has since reorganised its operational structure to fill the vacuum created by the disbandment of SARS,” the statement said.
“Currently, the leadership of the Force is focused on efforts at deepening reforms within the Police and bequeathing Nigerans a Police Force that will be more effective, efficient, technology-driven, humane and Rule of Law-compliant.”
