Leader of the Tijjaniya brotherhood in Nigeria, Khalifa Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Tuesday warned Islamic groups to stop begging for financial support from politicians, saying they should instead devise means of earning legitimate funds.
“Our sect should find ways of getting income; they should not rely on politicians because some of them (politicians) got their money through illegal ways.
“What is expected of us now is patience, fervent prayers and we must stand up to get things better in our own way through legitimate means,” the former monarch said.
Sanusi, who is a former Emir of Kano, disclosed this in Sokoto during a Northwest meeting of the Tijjaniya movement.
He also tasked the Islamic groups to establish schools and empowerment programmes for their followers.
The Khalifa, however, admonished Nigerians to stop cursing their leaders because of the current hardship bedeviling the country.
“In my own knowledge about the economy, I know that we must suffer to get things right,” the former central bank chief said.
He said Muslims should “desist from abusing or cursing our leaders because the Holy Prophet is against that.”
He also admonished Muslims to shun “corrupt practices and other atrocities because our religion preaches against it.”
“We must change for the better and remain committed to peace and development of our societies,” he said.
Earlier, the Tijjaniya leader had visited the Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar, and Emir of Gwandu Muhammadu Bashar in Kebbi state.
