The Country Director of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, has expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing situation involving the President of the Labour Union, Mr. Joe Ajeore, who has been invited by the police authorities to respond to various charges.
This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the IHRC country director. He said the commission has recognized the government’s duty to maintain law and order, adding that it is crucial that this process is carried out with fairness, transparency, and respect for the fundamental rights of all parties involved.
“We strongly appeal to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that Mr. Ajeore is treated with dignity and fairness throughout the investigation. It is imperative that the process upholds the principles of justice as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Any action taken must not only comply with the law but should also consider the broader implications for the nation’s security and social stability,” he said.
He explained that the commission would also want to remind the authorities that, under the Nigerian Constitution, every citizen is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, as stated in Section 36(5).
“This is a cornerstone of our legal system and must be upheld in all circumstances. Moreover, the right to a fair hearing and the protection of personal liberty, as articulated in Sections 36 and 35 of the Constitution, must guide all actions taken during this investigation,” be added.
