The Niger junta has set in motion a transition programme that will see it handing over power to civilian government within three years.
This was revealed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the Niger junta, in a televised broadcast on Saturday night.
Tchiani spoke after meeting with a delegation of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) led by the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).
The coup leader said within a month, the junta will form a committee to study and form the new constitution of the country.
He said though Niger does not want to go to war, but the county will defend itself if the need arises.
He, however, the door for negotiation was still open.
There is no immediate response from the ECOWAS yet to the speech of the junta leader.
The Niger’s military-appointed prime minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, has however assured that the detained Mohamed Bazoum would be safe and unharmed.
