Hundreds of residents of Damboa, a town about 100 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, have fled following an attack by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in the town on Wednesday.
A security source told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the incident happened at about 11am in the morning. He said he saw hundreds of residents fleeing the town as troops and the insurgents engaged in a fierce gun battle.
The source said a fighter jet has been deployed to give the ground troops the appropriate assistance in the battle.
ISWAP, an Islamic State (ISIS)-backed Boko Haram terrorist group which has taken over Sambisa forest after killing Abubakar Shekau, former Boko Haram leader, is gradually spreading to the hinterland.
