The House of Representatives yesterday raised campaign spending limits for candidates contesting elective offices, with that of the president increased from N5 billion to N10 billion and governorship, from N1 billion to N3 billion.
The lawmakers also mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the real-time electronic transmission of election results.
These decisions were part of the passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2025, after clause-by-clause consideration of the report of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, headed by Adebayo Balogun.
Under the amended Clause 93(2), spending limits for National Assembly candidates were also raised for senatorial candidates to now to spend up to N500 million as against the former N100 million limit; and House of Representatives candidates, N250 million from the previous N70 million.
Also, the campaign fund ceiling for state lawmakers was increased from N30 million to N100 million; chairmanship candidates, from N30 million to N60 million and councillorship candidates, N10 million from N5 million.
The House also fixed a provision restricting individual or corporate donations to a maximum of N500 million per candidate.
