Tiv Youth Council Worldwide (TYCW) says releasing the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, could be an “invitation for more treasonable acts.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had on November 19 told some Igbo leaders led by First Republic parliamentarian and Minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, that he will consider the “heavy” request for an unconditional release” of the IPOB leader, who is currently standing trial for treason.
But the TYCW said in a statement by its President, Mike Msuaan, that Buhari should not allow himself to be pressured into taking a decision “that will set a bad precedent.”
The group said it wasn’t proper to grant amnesty “to someone who has committed heinous crimes against the state and has not in any form shown remorse for his actions.”
“While we commend the elders for standing up for one of their sons, we are worried that these statesmen had no influence over the leader of the proscribed IPOB when he threatened the peace and unity of the nation and caused crises leading to the death of innocent citizens including security personnel as well as the destruction of government and private properties,” the statement said.
