A Qatar Airways flight on Friday night made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a technical fault immediately after takeoff.
Airport sources on Saturday revealed that the pilot alerted Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) of a mechanical problem a few minutes after taking off and demanded an emergency landing, which was promptly granted.
The plane 248 passengers and 12 crew members on board.
Qatar Airways operates Boeing 787-800 and 787-900 aircraft on its Doha–Lagos route.
The remote cause of the technical fault had not been determined as of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident.
Achimugu said “I can confirm there was an air return. Details will be communicated later.”
Similarly, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) source confirmed the emergency landing, saying it was a serious accident.
