Hundreds of youths have besieged major roads in some Northern states over the rising and widespread killings and kidnapping in the Northern part of the country.
Correspondents’ reports have shown that the protesting youths have occupied the capital cities of Kano, Bauchi, Zamfara, and Sokoto States, and Abuja, the country’s capital.
The protests were coming two days after 23 travellers in Sokoto were burnt alive by bandits.
Also on Thursday, 15 worshippers were killed and dozens of others wounded during bandits attack on a mosque in Ba’are village, Mashegu local government area of Niger state.
Northern parts of the country is facing security challenges in the past 12 years, ranging from terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, and the situation continues to get worse day by day despite government interventions.
The protesters chanting peace songs and carrying placards called on President Muhammadu Buhari and governors to show more interest in tackling insecurity.
In Kano, the protesters marched to the Government House, wielding placards with the inscription, ‘No More Blood Shed’.
The protesters were received by security operatives and promised to take the matter to the appropriate quarters.
The leader of the protesters, Zainab Naseer Ahmad, said insecurity was threatening the lives and livelihood of Nigerians.
“We come to share our concern and send a message to our leaders; we are tired of the worsening state of insecurity in the country,” she said.
“Every now and then, lives are lost, people are being unjustly killed like animals. We demand the return of peace in our societies.
“We are saying enough is enough, no more bloodshed! Out-of-school children is witnessing a massive rise, orphans everywhere. We can’t travel in peace, the economy is crumbling. People are burnt while travelling.”
