There were protests in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday following a directive by the Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, suspending the inauguration of the newly elected chairmen and councilors of the Area Councils.
The tenure of the officials was supposed to expire on Thursday and the newly-elected officials were due to be sworn in before the order stopping the process came.
The minister hinged the directive on existing court order which extended the tenure of the councils’ officials from three to four years based on the provision of the newly amended Electoral Act.
However, displeased by the extension, youths in the FCT took to the streets in protest, demanding the immediate swearing in of the elected council officials.
