Bandits have killed a a police officer in Kogi during a bomb attack an Area Command in the state on Firdau.
The slain officer was identified as Inspector Jibril. He was killed after a bomb attack on the area command at Eika-Ohizenyi in Okehi Local Government Area of the state.
Witnesses said attackers bombed the station around 12:15am with explosives and other weapons.
The blasts brought down part of the police station during the attack that lasted for more than two hours without any hinderance.
It was gathered that the only police officer on duty, Mr Jibril popularly known as Yellow, was killed during the attack while the only operational vehicle in the police station was destroyed.
The bomb shattered windows of Eika Community Central Mosque and a Catholic church near the police station, it was learned.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka, said he has “ordered the deployment of additional operational assets, consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, State Intelligence Bureau in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.”
Spokesperson of the command, SP William Aya, said part of the Area Command Office was razed by dynamite used by the attackers.
“A police inspector died in the exchange of fire with the hoodlums, before the Area Commander and a detachment of military in the area reinforced the scene of the incident, and the attackers fled,” he said.
