A police inspector and two other persons have been killed during a mob attack on a police station in the Yagba-West local government area of Kogi state.
The attack followed three bank robbery incidents in Odo-Ere and Egbe communities in the area.
Spokesperson of Kogi police command, William Aya, said in a statement issued in Lokoja, the state capital, that the irate youths attacked the police station after the Police had arrested two of the robbery suspects and taken them to the station.
“The mob from the community went to the station demanding that the two suspects be released to them for lynching,” he said.
“All efforts by the police to placate the mob proved abortive; it became violent and in the process lynched one Inspector Bamisaye Gbenga and injured PC Sunday Alechenu.”
A source said in an attempt to disperse the crowd, a policeman fired shots which killed two people, which led the mob to kill the policeman and set the station ablaze.
