The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Benneth Igweh, has ordered a clampdown on vehicles plying roads in the territory without number plates.
The FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
Adeh said the Command in the FCT accuse motorists of driving around the territory with single or no number plates.
She said car dealers were the major culprits, adding that they do such beyond the stipulated time of between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Section 25 (5) of the FCT Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
She said the unlawful act has pricked the attention of the populace, who question the effectiveness of the police in addressing the menace.
“Consequent upon this, the CP has given a marching order that vehicles plying the roads with a single or no number plate should be impounded, with the driver arrested and prosecuted.
“This is to also warn car dealers against parking their vehicles in an unauthorised parking lot and driving beyond the stipulated time.
“Defaulters will henceforth be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
Adeh reiterated the commitment of the command to ensure the safety of residents of FCT, adding that “no motorist or car dealer would be allowed to come in conflict with the substantive laws in the territory.”
She urged residents to be vigilant and take advantage of the police emergency lines in reporting suspicious activities on 08032003913, 08028940883, 08061581938 and 07057337653.
