The Sokoto Police have arrested one Emmanuel Basey and his wife for allegedly caging and starving a 12-year-old girl for eight months.
The victim, Joy Emmanuel, was rescued on Thursday following a report by unrevealed neighbour.
Joy was said to be a niece of Mr Basey’s wife, Esther who were before their arrest residing at Sokoto Cinema area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Command, ASP Sanusi Abubakar said the girl was kept in a cage inside their compound.
“She was starved of food for all these period and when our men broke into the cage, she was too frail to walk because of emaciation,” he said
According to him, their preliminary investigation revealed that the girl was mentally sound as against their claim that she was caged because of poor mental health.
“We took her to the Hospital where she was certified mentally stable and she is currently at Specialist hospital for further investigation and intensive treatment,” he said
Abubakar added that, both the couple and their victim would be handed to NAPTIP for further action.
