Senator Pam Dachungyang, representing Plateau State, has defected from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dachungyang’s defection letter was read on the floor of the Senate during plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced this during Thursday’s plenary.
The lawmaker stated in a letter titled “Notice of Defection from the Action Democratic Party,” that irreconcilable differences and prolonged internal crises within the ADP made him quit the party.
He said this has made it increasingly difficult for him to function effectively as a senator.
According to him, the move was not taken lightly, adding that he had wide-ranging consultations with key stakeholders in his senatorial district, including constituents and political associates.
The letter added that the movement was informed by the need to align with a political platform that best reflects his commitment to good governance, inclusive development, and the overall interest of the good people of his senatorial district.
“My defection is also necessitated by irreconcilable differences and persistent internal wrangling within the Action Democratic Party, which have hindered my ability to effectively contribute to the party’s ideals and deliver quality representation to my constituents,” the letter continued.
He asked the Senate to recognise his defection in line with constitutional provisions and to admit him as a member of the APC, a move that further strengthens the ruling party’s numbers in the upper legislative chamber.
