The Deputy National Chairman (South) and acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yemi Akinwonmi, is currently presiding over the party’s National Executive Committee meeting (NEC) in Abuja.23
The 92nd edition of the NEC meeting was aimed at addressing the discontents within the party leadership.
The meeting, is being attended by prominent PDP members including acting national chairman, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, 2019 Presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar; Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, Duoye Diri, Ishaku Darius, and Adamu Fintiri of Enugu, Oyo, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Taraba and Adamawa states respectively.
The embattled National Chairman, Uche Secondus, in a letter on Saturday, asked Akinwonmi, to preside over the NEC meeting of the party in his stead.
Secondus said, “I hereby request you to preside over the National Executive Committee meeting of the Party, taking place today, 28th August, 2021@ 12 noon, in my absence.’
Multiple court orders over the crisis that trailed the party leadership, have continue to frustrate the peace moves by some elders within the party.
Secondus had resumed at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday after a Kebbi State High Court on Thursday reinstated him as the party’s chair.
He was earlier suspended by a Rivers State High Court which barred him from presiding over party activities.
However, a high court sitting in Cross River State again, granted an interim order restraining Secondus from resuming office as PDP chair.
The presiding judge, Edem Kooffreh, gave the order while ruling on a motion ex parte marked HC/240/2021, and filed by an aggrieved member of the party, Enang Wani.
The PDP and Secondus are respondents in the suit.
