The Federal Medical Centre ( FMC) Yenagoa has cancelled all non- essential surgeries at the hospital following the destruction of the roof of the main theatre by heavy downpour.
FMC Yenagoa is the major hospital serving residents of Bayelsa State as the two state owned hospitals, Niger Delta Teaching Hospital Okolobiri and Diete- Koki Memorial Hospital, Opolo cannot cater for the health needs of residents of the state.
According to investigation , the heavy rainfall on Wednesday November 22 destroyed the roof of the main surgical theatre which forced the hsposital management to cancel all elective surgeries.
The hospital management has therefore advised patients with serious surgeries to seek help at private hospitals or go to government hospitals outside the state.
Though staff maintained sealed lips over the development sources said they were happy that no one was hurt during the incident.
A source at the hospital who lamented the development noted that the management of the hospital have been lackadaisical about upgrading and repairing dilapidated facilities.
” The FMC is the main hospital in Yenagoa saving lives of the people, Now this has happened and people would need to look elsewhere. for treatment. 90% of those coming to FMC cannot afford the exorbitant fees of private hospitals. What this means is that people would resign to fate and wait for death. It is pathetic that the hospital management would allow this to happen.
” Now we heard that it is one small theatre at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department which is the only functional surgical room that is being used for surgeries. This is saddening’,” he said.
Efforts to reach the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Peter Alabrah was abortive as he did not pick calls.
The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr Bernard promised to call back but he never did as of the time the report was filed.
