The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is unclear whether the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, is more transmissible or causes more severe disease compared to other variants.
Omicron has sparked concerns among Nigerians, even though the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had said the variant has not been detected in Nigeria.
However, two people in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa have tested positive for the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Ontario provincial government said the two people had recently travelled to Nigeria.
Cases have also been reported in the United Kingdom, Israel, Botswana, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and counting.
Researchers in South Africa last week said they had discovered the variant.
WHO, in a statement, said its experts, researchers in South Africa, and around the world are currently conducting studies to better understand Omicron.
It said the experts are studying to understand the aspects of Omicron, but as of right now, it is not clear whether it is more transmissible compared to other variants, including Delta.
