The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the Boko Haram for bombing a Gomboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State.
It described the attack as barbaric, dastardly and cowardly aimed at causing fear and undermining peace.
Chairman of the forum, and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, on Thursday, said the act caused profound sorrow and extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, as well as the families of the victims and those wounded by the bomb.
Yahaya said the targeting of a place of worship violated human conscience and religious sanctity, adding that such acts only reinforced the resolve of the region to stand united against terrorism and violent extremism.
The Governor appealed to security agencies and government officials in Borno State not to despair or yield to intimidation, adding that terrorism thrives on fear and division.
He told them to remain steadfast and resolute in the ongoing efforts to phase out terrorism and restore lasting peace to the region.
Yahaya further appealed for more security measures, particularly around places of worship and public spaces, especially during festive periods when large gatherings are common.
He told the people of Borno State the Former stands in solidarity with them and fully supports security agencies’ efforts to prevent further attacks.
The Governor prayed that Almighty Allah grants eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus to the souls of those who lost their lives, comforts their families and grants speedy recovery to the injured.
On Thursday evening, a suicide bomber sneaked into the Mosque when worshipers were in prayers, detonated an improvised explosion device, killing five worshippers and wounding 35 others.
