The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has said there is no recorded case of cholera so far in the state.
The Commissioner, however, admitted that there have been incidents of Gastroenteritis in the last few weeks, but not cholera.
“Gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection characterized by diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever, while cholera is a deadly disease characterized by diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dehydration and may lead to an immediate death,” he said.
He said cholera is caused by poor hygiene in food, environment, and water.
Yusuf stressed the importance of sanitizing unprocessed foods, such as vegetables and fruits, avoiding open defecation, and boiling of water and filtration.
He said the state government has set up an Epidemic Preparedness Response (EPR) team in the last few months to mitigate unforeseen circumstances.
