The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it adjusted the timetable for the 2027 general election, saying there is nothing as such.
A graphic circulating online claims that the commission released the official campaign timetable for the 2027 general election in line with the Electoral Act.
According to the graphic, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections would begin on August 19, 2026, and end on January 15, 2027, instead of January 14, 2027, as stated in INEC’s timetable, while the elections would be held on January 16.
The purported timetable further showed that governorship and state assembly campaigns would commence on September 9, 2026, and end on February 5, 2027, with the elections scheduled for February 6, 2027.
It also claimed that campaigns can only begin 150 days before an election and must end 24 hours before polling.
However, INEC’s revised timetable had fixed February 4, 2027, as the last day of campaigns for the governorship and state houses of assembly elections.
Chief press secretary (CPS) to Joash Amupitan, INEC chairman, Adedayo Oketola, said the information did not emanate from the commission.
Oketola said INEC does not issue separate campaign timetables, adding that all campaign timelines are contained in the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections.
He said all official campaign timelines are already contained within the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, which was released on February 26, 2026.
“We advise the media and the public to always verify electoral information through our official channels. As we enter the election season, we must all remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and disinformation.”
