Nine senators have defected from four parties to the African Democratic Congress on Thursday during plenary.
The affected parties are the Labour Party’s Senators Ireti Kingibe, FCT; Victor Umeh, Anambra Central and Tony Nwoye, Anambra North.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, Nasarawa South; Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Sokoto South; Binos Dauda Yaroe, Adamawa South; Austin Akobundu, Abia Central and Lawal Adamu Usman Kaduna Central as well as APGA’s Enyinnaya Abaribe, Abia South.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio who presided over Thursday’s plenary announced the defection of the nine Senators, saying “Oh, PDP is gone.”
Akpabio said the receiving ADC party is almost a sister party to the APC.
According to him, the senators said they were quitting their parties due to internal crises, divisions, litigations and leadership disagreements in the PDP and LP.
The defecting Senators said the development had made it difficult for them to work for their constituencies.
Tambuwal said “the persistent internal, leadership disagreement, litigations and divisions within the party at various levels have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my active participation and encouragement as a member of the PDP.
“The ongoing conflicts have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.”
