The Federal Government on Monday summoned the envoys of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union over their recent comments on the suspension of Twitter in the country.
On Friday, the federal government suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria indefinitely, after the microblogging site deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s civil war comment.
The decision attracted condemnation from the international community, which described it as clamp down on the rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression.
In a statement on Monday Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, invited the affected countries envoys to a meeting today at 12 noon, on the development.
The statement said “…following the recent ban on Twitter by the Federal Government and press statement issued by some Heads of Diplomatic Missions accredited to Nigeria on the subject matter, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Geoffrey
Onyeama has invited the affected Ambassadors to a meeting today at 12 noon.”
