Nigeria has exhausted the COVID-19 vaccine it received in the first vaccination phase, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has said.
This is as the authorities said the country is experiencing a third wave of infections.
NPHCDA’s Executive Director, Faisal Shuaib, disclosed this at the south-west zonal town hall meeting on COVID-19 vaccination in Lagos, on Thursday, said the country has officially ended the first phase of the vaccination plan, and exhausted 98 percent of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine it received in March.
He said 2,534,205 people were vaccinated for first dose, while 1,404,205 received their second dose of the vaccine.
Shuaib said Nigeria is now preparing to commence the second phase in the next few weeks with three additional brands of COVID-19 vaccines expected.
“We have also received communication for the delivery of the following vaccine shipments in the coming months,” he said.
“3,924,000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca by end of July or early August 2021 from the COVAX facility.
“4,000,080 doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in August from the COVAX facility donated by the United States Government
“3,577,860 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech COVID-19 vaccine in Q3 from the COVAX facility
“29,850,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson (Jassen) COVID-19 vaccine by the end of September, that will arrive in batches from the African Union Commission,” he said.
