The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says it has detected two cases of Omicron COVID-19 variant in the country.
NCDC Director-General, Ifedayo Adetifa, said in a statement Tuesday night that the variant was detected in two Nigerians who arrived in the country last week.
The Canadian Otarion government had said on Tuesday that two people that had recently travelled to Nigeria had been tested positive for Omicron.
The cases have also been reported in the United Kingdom, Israel, Botswana, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and South Africa.
However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) had said it was unclear whether the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, is more transmissible or causes more severe disease compared to other variants.
WHO, in a statement, said its experts, researchers in South Africa, and around the world are currently conducting studies to better understand Omicron.
