Niger State has said it would sack 5, 665 unqualified teachers in primary and secondary schools, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has said.
Governor Bello who received the report from the technical committee on the teachers’ headcount said in the alternative the affected teacher would go back to school and acquire the necessary qualifications.
He sympathized with the teachers, saying they suffer as a result of poor pay while pledging to give them the necessary support to motivate them.
“The number of unqualified teachers is high – over 4,000. We should take them out but we can also give them the option to be trained and come back,” he said.
He commended the committee for doing a good job, and ordered the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, to immediately constitute an implementation committee on the recommendations of the headcount committee.
Chairman, of the technical committee on the teachers’ headcount, Labaran Garba, earlier disclosed that there are 24, 061 with 4,703 unqualified teachers in 3, 135 primary schools, adding that 962 teachers of the 6, 870 teachers in 498 secondary schools in the state were also unqualified.
He said there are 1, 276 local government education administrative staff members who are qualified teachers, while his team submitted that the teachers’ headcount is conducted every three years to enable effective and efficient educational planning in the state.
