Pfizer and the National Health Insurance Authority are working to give Nigerians access to quality and accessible medicines.
Prof. Mohammed Sambo, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NHIA, who spoke at when they two bodies signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday, said the alliance will also assist to lessen healthcare disparities between the rich and the poor.
Represented by General Manager of Finance and Accounts, John Okoh, Sambo said, “The NHIA Medicines Supply Initiative is one of the major reforms introduced to ensure that medicines and other products are affordable, available, accessible, acceptability, and of good quality for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
Olayinka Subair, the West Africa Country Manager for Pfizer, said that: the Pfizer’s partnership with NHIA was a significant and commendable milestone for addressing the affordability challenges that contribute to high morbidity and mortality in critical care in Nigeria
Recall that the National Health Insurance Authority Bill 2022 was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on May 19, 2022.
The National Health Insurance Scheme Act, which has been in effect since 2004, is repealed by the bill.
Buhari had promised that a fund would be established during his speech at the law’s signing “to assure coverage of 83 million poor Nigerians who cannot afford to pay premiums as suggested by the Lancet Nigeria Commission.”
