Kungiyar Tallafin Mata Development Initiative has described the passage of Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) and Child Right Act (CRA) bills by the Kebbi State House of Assembly, as a development that would put sanity on human rights act and ensure violence free society, if fully enforced.
With the passage of the bill, Kebbi state has joined other 27 states in the country that had so far passed the bill.
The state House of Assembly passed the VAPP bill on September 30, 2021,
Spokesperson of the organisation, Zarau Ahmad, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday said the passage of the bill has also signified the state commitment towards the promotion and protection of the rights of the citizens.
“For the women’s rights community, the law is much more than a piece of legislation. It is a bold statement to the recognition of the fundamental human rights of women and girls, thus cancelling the notion of subjugation, control of agency and autonomy of women and girls through use of violence and other disempowering beliefs that are contrary to human development,” she said.
Ahmad said the NGO was instrumental in the passage of the bill, through its advocacy actions, and collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs, Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and other critical stakeholders.
