Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) billed customers N252.87 billion out of the N328.95 billion worth of electricity they received, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The figure is contained in the commission’s factsheet on ‘commercial performance of DisCos’ for May.

The agency said the difference between the value of energy received and the amount billed was N76.08 billion, representing a billing shortfall of 30.09 percent.

The report showed that billing efficiency declined to 76.87 percent in May, from 83.32 percent in April.

The report also showed that DisCos collected a total revenue of N208.15 billion in May, down from N302.96 billion recorded in the previous month.

The 11 DisCos, NERC said, recorded a collection efficiency of 82.32 percent, representing a 1.66 percentage-point increase from 80.66 percent in April.

According to the commission, the industry recorded an overall recovery efficiency of 77.31 percent, with an average actual collection of N96.16k per kilowatt-hour (kWh), against an allowed average tariff of N124.39/kWh.

The commission further said Ikeja DisCo (94.63 percent), Eko DisCo (91.54 percent), and Abuja DisCo (84.84 percent) recorded the highest recovery efficiency levels in May.

On August 3, the NERC said DisCos deployed 227,559 meters in March and April.

The commission said DisCos metered 111,654 additional customers in April, following 115,905 installations in the prior month.
