The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have warned construction firms over rising fibre optic cable damage.
NCC public affairs head, Nnenna Ukoha, and NSCDC spokesman, Babawale Afolabi, jointly issued the warning in a statement in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the duo, Ukoha said avoidable fibre cuts from negligence would no longer be excused, warning that offenders risk prosecution.
She described fibre optic cables as critical national assets powering the digital economy, communications, emergency services, businesses and government operations.
According to her, their destruction through negligence, poor coordination or wilful acts threatens national security, economic stability and public safety.
Ukoha cited the 2024 CNII Order, which classifies telecommunications fibre infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure.
She said damage from unauthorised digging, construction or failure to coordinate with authorities during works constitutes a criminal offence.
“Individuals, construction companies and government contractors who damage fibre infrastructure will face prosecution under applicable laws, including the Cybercrimes Act 2015.
“Future damage from excavation or road works without consultation will attract strict legal consequences,” Ukoha said.
She urged governments, builders, utilities and developers to verify fibre routes before construction and collaborate with NCC, operators and NSCDC.
Ukoha also advised adherence to excavation and right-of-way guidelines, and immediate reporting of accidental damage for rapid response.
“The public should report fibre sabotage to NSCDC offices or via protect@ncc.gov.ng, cipu@nscdc.gov.ng, or 622 toll-free,” she said.
