Prof. Mohammad Haruna, Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), stated that the agency was making progress in renewable energy technologies.
Haruna disclosed this at the unveiling of the ‘save 80 efficient cooking stoves ‘, designed and manufactured by Atmosfair, Germany in collaboration with the agency.
He said: ” With consideration to Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets for emission reduction by 2030, the use of energy-efficient cooking stoves will boost it.
”NASENI hitherto had made several efforts in renewable energy technologies including biomass, wind energy and solar module manufacturing plant at Karshi, Abuja.
“Our progress in the production of solar cells locally will drastically reduce the per megawatt cost of clean electricity and making solar electricity available.”
According to the NASENI EVC, the development of local solar cells will increase the affordability of solar energy by lowering prices and bolstering the energy mix.
“This would assist the nation to meet the UN SDG no. 7 on ensuring access to affordable, dependable, sustainable, and clean energy for all,” Haruna said.
“It will also assist Nigeria meet its NDC aim of reducing emissions by 2030.”
According to Dr. Dietrich Brockhagen, a representative of Atmosfair in Germany, 7.3 million efficient cooking stoves are expected to be in use in Nigerian households by 2030, in accordance with Nigeria’s NDC to the Paris Agreement.
He said:” The intergovernmental panel on climate change has identified the decline of sub-saharan forests as a tipping point for Ad ca, but for the entire world climate.
“So, we are all together in this and international cooperation will only strengthen our forces in combating global warming.
“Germany is too much dependent on Russian gas, Nigeria depends on firewood, but we can cooperate in both fields, be it with cooking stoves or green hydrogen gas and become stronger together.”
Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Amb. Faruk Malami-Yabo stated that the saving of 80 efficient cooking burners’ would contribute to combating the numerous disasters associated with climate change.
Three of the beneficiaries, Mrs Agada Mathew, Tani Tanko and Hafsatu Adamu commended NASENI and Atmosfair, Germany for the invaluable gesture.
”We will ensure the judicious usage of the stoves as they will curb many of the problems we are facing while using firewood or charcoal,” they said. (NAN)
