The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Niger State reported that it had detained eight individuals for allegedly making unhealthy ice cream, yoghurt and bread.
On Wednesday in Minna, Mr. Shaba Mohammed, Director of the agency’s North Central Zone, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She made this statement following an agency surveillance in the state’s Suleja region.
“Today, during our surveillance in Suleja, we found a collection of 15 facilities making unhealthy ice cream, yoghurt, and bread for Suleja’s schoolchildren.
Eight people were detained in relation to the unwholesome behaviors after “we instantly sprung into action,” the man claimed.
According to Mohammed, the suspects created the goods and distributed them to Suleja’s gullible schoolchildren.
He said that a bakery that used potassium bromate to make bread was also uncovered during the operation.
According to the director, NAFDAC also found out that the items weren’t registered with and certified by the organization.
We found that these items contain hazardous substances, hence they are unwholesome.
Unhealthy conditions are being used to make the goods.
According to him, some of these products may result in cancer, cholera, and other health problems.
He cautioned parents, guardians, and school administration to monitor what kids ate to promote healthy living.
We want anybody involved in such unwholesome activities to stop bringing their products into the school setting and be reported to NAFDAC, he said, asking for the help of parents and the school administration.
In a same vein, Mr. Francis Ononiwu, Director of Enforcement in the gency, declared that the suspects, who were members of the police, would be subject to appropriate investigations and legal action.
Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer Mr. Ahmed Yusuf stated that the organization would step its efforts with the police to capture the true proprietors of the producing outlets.
The state coordinator, Mr. James Kigbu, had earlier stated that the exercise was an ongoing effort to protect and preserve public health.
