The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said the legal advice by his office was not intended to save a former Commander of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, from facing criminal prosecution for alleged money laundering.
In a statement by his media aide, Umar Gwandu, the minister said the issues were raised for further investigation into the matter.
Malami, in a legal advice, had directed the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to carry out further investigations, noting that a prima facie case of money laundering had been established against the DCP.
He equally urged the force to intensify investigation into 33 crime proceeds received by the ex-IRT commander.
The minister said media reports suggesting that the legal advice was meant to give Malami a soft-landing were misleading.
He said, “The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice’s stance is that no conclusion has been reached in the direction of absence of evidence relating to the first report,” he said.
“The issues were raised for further investigation with a view to cover the field in investigation with a view to arrive at an informed decision.”
