Female Muslim female students in Lagos State have the right to wear hijab to school without harassment or discrimination, the Supreme Court has ruled.
The apex court delivered this majority judgement In Abuja Friday in Abuja.
Supreme Court panel that heard the case included Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Justice John Inyang Okoro, Justice Uwani Aji, Justice Mohammed Garba, Justice Tijjani Abubakar, and Justice Emmanuel Agim.
Five of the justices approved the use of hijab, while two dissented.
In October 2014, a Lagos High Court had ruled against the use of hijab in schools.
The judgement was overturned by an appeal court in July 2016.
In a unanimous judgment, the Court of Appeal ruled that the ban was discriminatory against Muslim pupils in Lagos State.
Lagos state government, however, took the case to the Supreme Court.
In August 2018, the state government slammed a ban on the use of hijab in public schools.
To avoid court contempt, the state government asked that the status quo be maintained.
