The MTN telecommunications network is currently down across Nigeria over multiple fibre cuts.
Subscribers of the telecom giant on Wednesday afternoon find it impossible to make or receive calls while others are not able to make use of their internet through the network.
In its response, MTN on Wednesday night revealed the cause of the network problem as a “major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts, affecting voice and data services.”
The telecommunication service explained that its engineers are working hard to resolve with services gradually being restored in some areas.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and ask for your patience and understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible,” the telecom giant said.
Earlier, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reiterated its directive to telecom operators to bar telephone subscribers not linked to their National Identification Numbers on or before February 28, 2024.
The Executive Vice Chairman, the National Communication Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, spoke at the NCC’s Special Day during the ongoing 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair on Wednesday.
He reiterated that the February 28th deadline given to telecom operators to bar subscribers who failed to link their NIN to SIM, stands.
“To this end, the National Communication Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024,” Mr Maida said.
