The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), has called on the Federal and Niger State Governments to provide immediate emergency relief to the victims of the recent devastating flood disaster in Mokwa and provide long-term solutions.
The Secretary-General of JNI, Prof. Khalid Aliyu, made the appeal in a statement he issued on Thursday in Kaduna.
Aliyu expressed JNI’s deep sorrow and solidarity with the government and people of Mokwa, Niger and Nigeria, following the calamitous flood that had swept through the area, leaving destruction, despair, and displacements in its wake.
He said the JNI, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Federal and Niger governments to prioritise long-term preventive measures to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
According to him, the flood had submerged homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure, rendering thousands of people homeless and disrupting livelihoods.
Aliyu said the JNI had also expressed concern about the vulnerability of women, children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups in the affected communities.
He appealed to the Muslim faithful, clerics and Islamic charities, as well as humanitarian organisations to mobilise urgent relief materials, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical supplies, to support the affected communities.
The JNI scribe also called on the Muslims to offer prayers for the victims, citing the significance of the Day of Arafat.
“The Sultan of Sokoto has commiserated with the Government and people of Niger and the Etsu Nupe, expressing his deep concern for the welfare of the affected communities,”he said.
Aliyu added that the sultan has called for immediate emergency relief for the affected communities, long-term preventive measures, including improved drainage systems and resettlement plans for flood-prone communities.
