Local governments in the country have been charged to make their areas friendly and attractive to investors and investment, to reduce over reliance on shared revenue from the federal government.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, gave the charge at the opening ceremony of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) exhibition/trade fair held in Abuja, as part of activities to commemorate the Nigeria at 60 Diamond Jubilee Celebration.
He said the event had demonstrated and complemented the efforts of the Federal Government to focus on promoting and strengthening economic development at the grassroots level and the overall development of the country at large.
While commending the ALGON leadership for its sustained commitment towards ensuring grassroots development that would translate to prosperity in the rural communities across the country, he noted that the event would serve as a means for local governments to increase economic activities in the short and long run.
According to Adebayo, the event would also create a platform for sensitisation and awareness and also also provide a means of repositioning the local governments towards having a better mindset of fostering economic development of its citizenry.
